History :

Our nation has a rich history dating back to Gojoseon, an ancient era. The Korean people were known to be brave and adventurous , and they enjoyed horseback riding and archery contest. Taekkyeon originated in Gojoseon and evolved into martial art similar to today’s Taekkyeon during the Goguryeo kingdom, more than 2,000 years ago. Taekkyeon can be traced back to wall paintings on various tombs from the 4th an 5th centuries AD. Historical books such a Goryeosa, Joseonwangjosilok,Dongkugyejiseungnam, Jaemulbo, and Joseonsanggosa describe the development and influence of Taekkyeon. In Goryeo kingdom, a soldier’s promotions was based on their skill in Taekkyeon , according to Goryeosa. Taekkyeon was introduced into china and transformed into Gwonbeob (Chiness Boxing) and yudo in Japan, according to Joseonsanggosa. Although Taekkyeon was neglected during the joseon Dynasty, it became a national holiday sports in 1920s. the original form of Taekkyeon was verified and systemized by Song Deok-Gi and Shin Han-Seung, who were culture assets to Taekkyeon.

The Korean Government nominated Taekkyeon as an Important Intangible Asset No.76 on June 1,1983. In November 2011, Taekkyeon became the first martial art to be registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognizing its cultural diversity and creativity.

Taekkyeon Lineage :

The reason Taekkyeon was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset is due to tireless efforts of Grandmaster Shin Han- Seung. However, since Taekkyeon was considered a common martial art, there is no exact traceable lineage before King Go-Jong (1852-1919). The lineage of Taekkyeon can only see after this period (See Illustration of Taekkyeon Lineage). Shin Han-Seung, the last  successor of the “Old” Taekkyeon (which was designated as important Intangible Asset #76 on June 1st, 1983), traveled around the country to study various disciplines of Taekkyeon starting in 1961.

He used this knowledge of systemize a prototype         for an actual Taekkyeon “gym” in Chung-ju in 1973. Since the very first Taekkyeon exhibition at the Seoul YMCA in 1977, many people in Korea have continued to promote and develop the martial art to this day.
